I can get into safe mode BTW.To download an data2.cab file, you can follow these general steps: It's an IBM Thinkpad, so that explains the "IBMTP" part - I cant think of what the "URA" stands for.Īny insight on this would be greatly appreciated! I'll hit the IBM site too I guess. Here are the last few that load before it hangs:Īnd that's where it hangs. I did a line by line confirmation, it runs thru the initial stuff, scandisked, hit the splash screen, and then back into loading the VXD files. So, still optimistic, I removed the halfway installed NIC from Device Mgr, and rebooted to let it autodetect again.īut now it's hanging!!! After the splash screen. So I am able to browse to the actual CD now. But at least now, when I add a componnent and the "insert Win CD" comes up, there is a browse button there that wasnt there before. The xcopy did run, but it didnt seem to create the directory. So, enthused, I moved along to the laptop, and did it again. Thanks for the help! I used the xcopy on the desktop, and it worked fine. Once your done installing this way, if someone uses the add/remove/windows setup function, they won't be prompted for the W98 CD since Windows looks to the cabs folder for anything it needs to add. Just tell it to overwrite the Windows directory. Xcopy d:\win98\*.* c:\windows\options\cabs\*.* /sĬopy c:\setup.exe c:\windows\options\cabsīTW, when you run setup it will want to create a Windows001 folder because it finds a Windows folder already on the HD. If you only want the W98 folder from the CD and not the addon, samples, etc folders then use this xcopy statement After your format boot to a command prompt with CDRom support using your boot disk. I prefer to have them on any hardrive though. I wanted to install a second HD on the new PC, and cant even make a startup disk - need files.īy default Windows does not install the cabs to the hardrive. I've screwed around so much at this point, I cant remember if this directory was there or I created it, but I have been extracting some of them to C:\Win98 directory on the new PC, but considering there is something like 65+ files, no way am I doing this manually! Plus, talk about space! What am I missing in the installation process? Arent these files all supposed to be on the drive once you install the OS? I began playing with the Cab files on the new PC, and opened them with WinZip, and extracted some of them to a zip drive. Same deal, once I reboot and need to copy files, to install networking componnents, what have you, I cant find the files on the C drive. This PC would not see the CD ROM at that point either. I browsed on the other PC to see what directory they were in, but those directories either didnt exist, or the files inside didnt exist. After the first re-boot, when it asks you to "insert the Windows 98 CD" so it can copy files - they werent there. (I got my new one at a show, no OS CD came with it.)Įverything went along fine, I formatted the drive and installed from scratch. I have a couple of burned copies of 98, but I used my neighbor's copy that came with her PC. I have them all networked together peer to peer. I also have a few older PC's that I wanted to load 98 on also, and just use them as backups, and to screw around on. Okay, I have a new PC I purchased with 98 pre-loaded.
